BY RICARDO LUIS, LEONOR MUNOZ, VALERIE PEREZ, and CIRILO VIEYRA Do you think immigration has changed over the years? Our social justice topic is immigration. Our main idea is how does the government react to immigration? We interviewed Marco Loera, he works with the National Day Labor Organization Network. ”Immigration has changed over the years,” said Marco Loera. “Because it has become more strict than before.” This connects to the main idea because the president has reacted negatively over the years. As a group we learned that immigration can be very hard to pass through but you don’t need to give up.
Immigration and Deportation
BY JORGE CEJA, VANESSA ESQUIVEL, AMELIA SALCEDO, and VALERIA TELLEZ Have you ever wondered why immigrants get deported? Our social Justice topic is immigration. My group believes deportation is bad because when people get deported to other places they arrive there without a lot of money and it’s usually hard for people to find jobs and sometimes come to the problem of not being able to maintain their family. We also listened to Mr. Jose Luis Benavides’ interview and found out that he is a college professor with a phD. The day of the interview was May 17,2018 and was located in Lennox Middle School, Mrs.Nwosu’s classroom #118. One quote that me and my group found interesting was, “she went to the university and finished her degree, two years later she was grabbed by la migra on the streets,” said Mr. Jose Luis Benavides. “The girl’s name was Nancy.” This quote connects to the main idea because it shows that her family must have been devastated and it also shows discrimination toward immigrants and it was also very unfair since she had been working very hard to earn her degree. Lastly, as a group we learned that deportation is bad and can hurt people badly in many ways for example, being separated from their families. After all of this research, my group believed that immigrants are working hard to reach their goal.
Families Separated because of Deportation
BY KARINA AREVALO, ALEXANDER LUNA, JUAN RIVERA, and FERNANDA XHURAPE Do you know who Jose Luis Benavides is? Jose Luis Benavides is a Spanish journalism professor at Cal State Northridge (CSUN), who works with undocumented students. This story is about how families are separated because their parents are deported and how some students struggle to get in a 4-year college because they don’t have papers. Jose Luis Benavides told us that he had a student that was about to finish college and her parents got deported and how she struggled to get her diploma and take care of her siblings. In “Dreamer Sin Miedo y con ganas,”a story written by one of Benavides students, it said that on October of 2001, the 540 law passed and allowed undocumented students to pay their tuition as if they were residents of California, as long as they met certain requirements, such as going to night school for at least three years. The story was about immigrants, and people who got deported .We learned how much some students struggle to get in college only because they don’t have papers and their parents are deported.
How Immigration Changed
BY ALYSSA AMEZCUA, MIA CARREON, ELIZA DEL CID, and LOURDES PONCINO Immigration has evolved over the years in many different ways. Our social justice topic is immigration. Immigration has changed in many ways but depends on the person that thinks or is against the topic. We listened to an interview with Marco Loera. A quote that we chose was, “many companies were sent overseas because of tax reasons.” That connects to our topic because it changed how many companies thought about immigration because their companies got moved to different places, and that slowly changed how people thought about immigration. As a group we learned that immigration has changed in both good and bad ways.
