BY SAVANNAH JIMENEZ, LIZBETH NOLASCO PIZANO, ANA RODRIGUEZ, and JOSHELYN ROSAS Discrimination affects people for many reasons like religion, culture, gender, and skin color. It’s not right to judge people who are different, everyone should be different. Being different is better than being all the same because if everyone were the same life would be boring. What we listen to was an interview with Dr. Melina Abdullah. “They called the police on my daughter that’s in fourth grade,” said Dr. Abdullah. Dr. Abdullah is saying that the school called the police on her daughter because she is black and different. “I tweeted not to call the police on black people,” said Dr. Melina Abdullah. How this quote connects to the main idea is the quote is talking about how some people judge other people for who they are. What our group learned about discrimination is that it affects many people, but especially some blacks. We also learned that we should respect people who are different.
Changing the Way We See
BY AMANDA AVALOS, CHRISTOPHER KUK, ENRIQUE MURILLO, and NATALIE ZACARIAS “He called this boy a threat and killed this boy because he’s black,” said Dr. Melina Abdullah. Our topic is about discrimination and how Melina Abdullah who has a Ph.D. is working with “Black Lives Matter” to prevent discrimination and racism in many ways. Melina Abdullah is one of the founders of “Black Lives Matter” in Los Angeles. “We have to get up and build up a movement not a moment,” she said. Melina Abdullah is making a movement to stop discrimination and racism while trying to change the way people are, in positive ways. We learned that people can just discriminate because of race, gender, and religion which isn’t okay.
Everyone Has the Same Heart
Period 6
BY ESTRELLA RIOS LOPEZ, ARIYAH KNOX, and HUMBERTO ERROA Did you know police are more likely to pull over blacks and Latinos than whites? "A lot of people are killed by police just because they think they are doing something wrong, just because of their skin color,” said Dr. Melina Abdullah. Racism is based on race and other people who are not people of color treat them differently and unfairly. One way to end racism is to talk it out and tell each other how we feel and how we get treated differently. Melina Abdullah started marches for the rights and equalities for colored people. Police only stop people of color because they think they are doing something wrong just because of their skin color. During this research we all learned that racism is a worldwide problem, racism can happen in different areas and in different ways, and that racism is not in that place, it comes from inside that person.
